Sky has put 900 UK jobs at risk as it continues reshaping its business to compete with US streaming services. The consultation process is expected to cut around 600 roles, with 300 redeployed, mainly affecting technology, product, and corporate teams.
This is the third round of cuts in just over 18 months, following launches of Sky Glass, Sky Glass Air, and Sky Stream. Since early 2023, Sky has reduced nearly 3,500 roles as it moves away from traditional satellite pay-TV, with more than 90% of new subscriptions now coming through internet-based products. The latest cuts bring the workforce back to roughly 23,000, the level it held when Comcast acquired the company in 2018.
Sky said it is focusing on digital-first services, stronger content, and improved product performance. Earlier this year, the company cut 2,000 customer service roles and closed three sites, while 800 installation roles were cut in January as households shift to plug-and-play streaming. A deal with Warner Bros Discovery will bring HBO Max to Sky, ending its exclusive broadcast rights.
