Real Sociedad claimed a thrilling 3–2 victory over Athletic Club in one of the most dramatic Basque derbies in recent memory, capped by Jon Gorrotxategi’s stoppage-time winner in the pouring rain.
The match, filled with passion and chaos, swung back and forth before Gorrotxategi — playing in his first derby — smashed home the decisive goal in the 92nd minute. “I hit it terribly but with my soul,” he said after sealing the first stoppage-time win in 178 Basque derbies.
The Reale Arena erupted as Sociedad players celebrated with their fans, ending a tense few weeks for new coach Sergi Francisco. His team, who had been sliding toward the relegation zone, have now won two straight league games.
The evening began with a memorable moment as Ander Barrenetxea, injured just seconds earlier, limped back onto the pitch to deliver the cross that led to Brais Méndez’s opener. Athletic equalized through Gorka Guruzeta before Gonçalo Guedes restored La Real’s lead. Robert Navarro then bundled in a late second equalizer for Athletic — only for Gorrotxategi to strike at the death.
The result brought immense relief and joy to San Sebastián. “La Real are alive,” wrote Noticias de Gipuzkoa. “They have soul. They love their people. And sometimes, they make them very, very happy.”
