Deadline draws near
Brazil has issued a strong appeal for nations to deliver updated climate plans before a critical September cut-off date. Only 28 countries have submitted proposals so far, with major emitters such as China and the EU still missing from the list.
Global progress under review
The UN requires all nationally determined contributions (NDCs) by 25 September to compile a report showing whether current commitments are sufficient to keep global warming below 1.5C. Without these pledges, the assessment risks being incomplete.
Diplomatic pressure intensifies
Cop30 president André Corrêa do Lago reminded governments that climate pledges are not just targets for 2035 but a shared vision of the future. He warned that if contributions fall short, tougher discussions will follow in November. President Lula da Silva has also spoken directly with China’s Xi Jinping to press for progress.
Venue challenges raise concerns
Preparations in Belém, the Amazon city hosting Cop30, have raised concerns about accommodation and transport. With up to 50,000 participants expected, hotel shortages have driven nightly rates into the hundreds of dollars. Brazil plans to bring in cruise ships and rental schemes, but doubts remain about whether the city can handle the scale of the event.
