Officials Examine Possible Coordinated Operation
Danish authorities reported drone sightings over four airports from Wednesday night into early Thursday, triggering an investigation into a potential organized threat. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen characterized the flights as systematic and executed by a professional operator. Intelligence sources noted similar drone activity in Europe, pointing to possible Russian involvement, although no party has claimed responsibility.
Airports Experience Flight Delays
The affected airports included Aalborg, Esbjerg, Sønderborg, and Skrydstrup. Aalborg, which also serves a military function, faced the longest disruptions, while Skrydstrup, home to fighter jets, was also impacted. The drones, which flew with lights visible, were not engaged by authorities. Officials confirmed that the public remained safe despite the interruptions.
Denmark Explores Strengthened Drone Countermeasures
In reaction to the events, Denmark is considering legislation allowing critical infrastructure operators to neutralize unauthorized drones. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is coordinating with NATO and EU partners on regional defenses, including the concept of a “drone wall.” Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard indicated the drones were likely intended to create fear and division, underscoring the importance of enhancing security at key facilities.
