Expanding Capacity Across the U.S.
The Stargate initiative, a long-term infrastructure campaign led by OpenAI with Oracle and SoftBank as key collaborators, is moving ahead with the launch of five more data centers. The new facilities are planned for Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; Milam County, Texas; Lordstown, Ohio; and a fifth Midwestern location that has not yet been named. These developments will bring total expected computing capacity close to 7 gigawatts, advancing an overall vision that could reach $500 billion in cumulative investment for artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Companies Outline Their Roles
In the latest update, Oracle will oversee three of the new construction projects, while SoftBank will partner on two others. The additions raise total pledged commitments to nearly $400 billion. Executives involved in the project say Stargate is designed to create the backbone for future AI technologies, combining Oracle’s cloud infrastructure, SoftBank’s international communications reach, and OpenAI’s research needs into a coordinated buildout.
Local Impact and Infrastructure Needs
The companies forecast tens of thousands of jobs generated by both construction and long-term operations once the centers go online. Local officials are beginning to examine proposals for zoning, incentive packages, and infrastructure connections. Experts note that facilities of this magnitude will place heavy demands on electricity and water, particularly in Texas and New Mexico. Supporters contend that despite those challenges, the Stargate program will bolster U.S. competitiveness in artificial intelligence and provide new economic opportunities for the communities hosting the sites.
