An electric streetcar derailed in Lisbon on Wednesday, killing at least 15 people and injuring 18 others. Portuguese television showed the yellow-and-white tram lying on its side along a narrow hill road. Rescuers reported its roof and sides were partially crushed. President Condemns the Accident
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed condolences to the victims and their families. Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the crash. Reports indicate the derailment occurred around 6 pm, at the start of the evening rush hour.
Glória Funicular Serves City Residents
The Glória funicular carries more than 40 passengers, both seated and standing. Lisbon residents commonly use the tram for steep hill travel.
