A senior Russian military official, Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, died Monday morning after a car exploded in southern Moscow. The blast occurred in a parking lot adjacent to a residential building, Russian media reported. Sarvarov, who led the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff, suffered fatal injuries and later succumbed, the Investigative Committee confirmed.
Investigation Launched
Russian authorities quickly opened a criminal case following the explosion. The motive for the attack remains unclear, and investigators have not revealed how the explosive device was planted or triggered. Officials described the killing as a targeted act and confirmed that the investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the blast.
Exploring Possible Foreign Links
Authorities are considering multiple angles, including possible involvement by Ukrainian intelligence. “Investigators are pursuing numerous lines of enquiry regarding the murder. One of these is that the crime was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services,” said Investigative Committee spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko. She added that forensic and explosives examinations are underway, witnesses are being interviewed, and surveillance footage is being analyzed to gather evidence.
No Response From Kyiv
Ukrainian officials have not responded to the allegations. Russian authorities also have not publicly identified any suspects or provided further evidence connecting the attack to foreign actors.
Part of a Pattern of Attacks
The incident follows a series of high-profile killings of Russian military officials in Moscow since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov was killed in December 2024 by a remotely detonated scooter, and Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik died in April from a car bomb. Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for either case.
